An early morning fire gutted a two-story mercantile building at 209 Bedford Street.  The fire at the Lione – Mitchell Building also threatened several adjacent buildings but was brought under control before the fire could spread.  The Delf Company, a hardware store on the first floor, The Vuono Construction Company, and the meeting hall of the All -American Club on the second floor were destroyed.

The blaze was started by an overflow of oil in the burner for the building.  Other stores in the immediate area, including Maddaloni Men’s Shop and Hans Greiner,  suffered moderate smoke damage.
