About 21 people were left homeless when a kitchen fire destroyed most of a three-story apartment house on Division St. on Tuesday, January 8, 1991. According to the Stamford Advocate, the fire initially started at about 10:45 AM when food cooking in a second floor kitchen burst into flames and then raced through the 16th apartment building. This was later found to be untrue. Residents evacuated when the smoke alarm sounded.

Two firefighters were rescued from the third floor using ground ladders due to the fear the third floor was going to collapse.

Stamford firefighters brought the blaze under control by 1 PM. The official cause of the fire, as determine by the Fire Marshal was an electrical problem on the second floor.
