At 09:41 AM on February 1, 2000, Stamford Fire units responded to Box 3414, 791 E. Main Street for a reported structure fire. First arriving crews encountered a heavy volume of smoke and fire coming from a first-floor grocery store. Hose lines were stretched and an aggressive attack on the fire ensued. Rescue crews performed a primary search on the residential floors above the fire as the truck crews performed ventilation operations, but the fire quickly found its way to the 2nd floor and began to build and spread rapidly. Within a few minutes, heavy fire and smoke conditions drove all crews out of the buildings. There was a tense two minutes while fire crews evacuated the building and all crews could be accounted for.

The fire soon consumed the entire building and was not brought under control for several hours.
